In October 1988, for the 1989 model year, a redesigned dash was introduced to accommodate dual air bags. This unprecedented move made the Ford Motor Company the first American automaker to offer airbags as standard equipment for both the driver and the front passenger, the second automaker worldwide after Porsche's 944 Turbo. Car and Driver had put the Continental on its Ten Best list for 1989, and annual sales had doubled over the previous generation.
