The LS 400 debuted as a 1990 model at the Detroit show in January 1989. Production began on 15 May 1989, the first cars reached buyers in August and United States sales began on 1 September 1989. By 1990 its American sales had passed those of competing Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Jaguar models. This was the first model year of the Lexus LS (first generation, XF10), 1990 to 1994, the first generation covered for the Lexus LS; the 1991 model year follows it.
