US sales of the Freelander fell to 6,618 in 2003, from 15,021 the year before, as reliability problems emerged with the KV6 engine and the automatic transmission. The three-door SE3 was introduced in the American market that year. Freelander owners eventually launched a class-action lawsuit, and Land Rover settled with compensation or by repurchasing cars. In the 2003 model year the Freelander was the car's compact rival to the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V.
