The Series II Discovery, internally L318, appeared in autumn 1998 after BMW had bought Rover Group, and Land Rover advertised it as having 720 differences from the Series I. It was less utilitarian but still an evolution of the original, on the same 100-inch wheelbase ladder-frame chassis with live axles, with a longer rear to seat seven adults in forward-facing seats. The 2.5-litre Td5 five-cylinder diesel arrived and the V8 became the Range Rover's 4.0-litre unit. A facelift in 2002 added new headlamps and reinstated the centre differential lock. It was the last Land Rover built on the original Range Rover underpinnings.
