The 1988 Cherokee introduced the Sport trim, which would run through 2001, and the Laredo upholstery changed to a luggage fabric for 1988 through 1992. The XJ Cherokee was by now a popular compact SUV with the 4.0 liter six cylinder engine as its most powerful option. The Sport trim of 1988 to 2001 had cloth and vinyl upholstery and an AM/FM radio with two speakers, and later added a cassette player and four speakers.
