The compact XJ Wagoneer base trim was soon discontinued, with its last model year being 1987, and the Limited remained. The XJ Cherokee itself added the Limited trim for 1987 as the top of the line, which ran through 1992 and returned in 1998. The Laredo trim used plaid upholstery through 1987, and the Limited, available from 1987 to 1992 and again from 1998 to 2001, had monotone paint, leather and vinyl upholstery and color keyed lace spoke wheels.
