The 1989 Cherokee was the sixth model year of the XJ, sold as the Pioneer, Chief, Laredo, Sport and Limited. Together they offered the compact SUV with two or four doors, and rear or four wheel drive, with a choice of manual or automatic transmission. The Chief and Pioneer trims were still offered, with the Chief on cloth plaid and an AM/FM radio with two speakers, and the Sport on cloth and vinyl.
