The 1964 Imperials were the first designed entirely by Elwood Engel, and they bore a strong resemblance to the Lincoln Continental, with clean slab sides, a split grille returning and a ribbon speedometer. The base Custom model was dropped, power windows became standard on all Imperials, and Crown coupes adopted the small LeBaron formal rear window. A total of 23,295 were sold, the second best sales year in Imperial history, and the critic Tom McCahill praised how flat it cornered.
