The Honda Prelude made its world debut in Amsterdam at the AutoRAI show of 1979, two months after it launched in Japan. The Prelude took until March 1979 to reach the United States, where its larger 1.8 liter engine made 72 hp at 4,500 rpm, and it came to Europe in 1979 as well, but a high price kept it from selling strongly. A three speed automatic with the last gear as overdrive replaced the two speed Hondamatic semi automatic by October 1979.
