The VB Commodore was introduced in October 1978 as a single sedan body style, in base, SL and SL E trim, and secured the Wheels Car of the Year award for 1978. Holden also adopted the name Commodore from Opel, which had been using the name since 1967. Production was initially spread between Holden's Pagewood in New South Wales and Dandenong in Victoria, and in August 1978 Holden announced a program to enable assembly at the Elizabeth plant in South Australia.
