The 1976 model year was the last for the sixth generation, and some items that had been standard in 1975, such as the AM/FM stereo, front cornering lights and tinted glass, moved back to the options list. The rear windows became stationary, a move to keep costs down that was shared with the 1976 Continental Mark IV. The big Thunderbird was succeeded for 1977 by a smaller intermediate sized car. The sixth generation had been the largest Thunderbird ever built.
