The Thunderbird was introduced for 1980 as a car marking its 25th year, and was heavily downsized onto an extended wheelbase version of the Fox platform, so that it matched the exterior footprint of the 1978 GM coupes. Seating dropped from six to four. The standard engine was a 115 horsepower 4.2 liter V8 with a 131 horsepower 5.0 liter as an option, and late in the model year an 88 horsepower inline six was offered for the first time, as a delete option.
