In South Africa the Telstar was replaced by the Mondeo in 1998, which was later fully imported. In Japan the Telstar of 1998 was the final model, on sale only as a sedan and wagon with no liftback, and was briefly offered with Mazda's four wheel steering system. The Telstar was a Mazda 626 with Ford badges and some local styling, sold where Ford wanted a mid size car. Ford later replaced it in most markets with the Mondeo, which was developed as a world car.
