The last Telstar, on the Mazda GF platform, was released in 1997 and sold only in Japan as a sedan or wagon. Local assembly of the Telstar ended in New Zealand that year when the VANZ plant in Auckland closed, and the Belgian built Mondeo replaced it in all forms. Ford later replaced it in most markets with the Mondeo, which was developed as a world car. The Telstar was a Mazda 626 with Ford badges and some local styling, sold where Ford wanted a mid size car.
