In February 1987 a restyled Sierra was launched for the 1988 model year, with a new front end, indicators above the bumper, and a four door saloon version, marketed as the Sapphire in Britain. A new 1.8 liter lean burn petrol engine became one of the most popular choices. A 225 PS Sierra Cosworth, the RS500, of which only 500 were built to meet homologation rules, helped Ford win the manufacturer's title in the 1987 World Touring Car Championship.
