In 1990 the 4.0 liter Cologne V6 was introduced, an engine that in modified form was used through the 2012 model year discontinuation of the Ranger in North America. After the decision not to series produce the Ranger GT with the SHO V6, the GT was shelved for 1990. The Ranger was powered by Lima fours, Cologne V6s and the Vulcan V6 in its first generation. The truck was sold in regular cab and SuperCab forms, powered by the Lima four cylinder, the Vulcan V6 or the new 4.0 liter V6.
