The final year of the original Mustang brought mild restyling. A larger urethane front bumper became standard to meet new federal standards, and vertical turn signals replaced the sport lamps because the bumper now covered their old position. Magnum 500 wheels were superseded by forged aluminum five hole wheels. The 1973 cars were the last Mustang convertibles until 1983, and the name moved on to the smaller Pinto based Mustang II the next year.
