Safety was a theme of the 1968 changes, which added a two spoke energy absorbing steering wheel and newly introduced shoulder belts, with side markers at both ends of the car and the mirror moved from the frame to the windshield. A 302 cubic inch V8 became an option and C-stripe graphics were added. The year's Mustang GT 2+2 fastback became famous after Steve McQueen drove one in the film Bullitt, and a California Special coupe was sold in western states.
