In 2002 the Mondeo was voted Car of the Year by the New Zealand Motoring Writers' Guild, though the second generation was never sold in Australia, where Ford argued the segment was in decline. Ford do Brasil re-imported the Mondeo from 2002 as a saloon with the 2.0 liter engine in a single Ghia trim. The old Endura D diesel had been replaced by the more sophisticated common rail 2.0 liter Duratorq with a variable geometry turbine.
