1978 was the last year of the second generation LTD, which was succeeded by the much smaller third generation built on the Panther platform, with production of the 1979 car beginning on 31 July 1978 at Louisville Assembly. The mid size LTD II continued as the larger of the two cars. The Police Interceptor of 1973 to 1978 ended its run with this generation of LTD. The mid size LTD II was in its second year and the full size LTD was soon to be replaced by a downsized car.
