When Ford updated its mid size product line for 1977 it took on the LTD name as well, calling the cars the LTD II to differentiate them from the full size LTD, as a downsized alternative to the full size car at a time when General Motors had introduced downsized full size sedans. The LTD II was based on the Torino and served as a restyled replacement for it. Ford compared the 1977 LTD's dimensions with the Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham.
