In 1969 Jacky Ickx and Jackie Oliver won the 24 Hours of Le Mans for John Wyer's team with the already outdated GT40 Mk I, in the very car that had won in 1968, beating the remaining 3.0 liter Porsche 908 by just a few seconds. The win was the fourth consecutive overall Le Mans victory for the GT40. Porsche had invested in building 25 of its flat twelve 917 to be homologated from May 1969. The car had been homologated as a Group 4 sportscar.
