The Lincoln Aviator was dropped after the 2005 model year, so the fourth generation Explorer did not have a Lincoln counterpart. The fourth generation Explorer entered production in July 2005 for the 2006 model year, which made 2005 the last model year of the third generation, a purpose built five door SUV, in a market where its sibling the Mountaineer carried on. The Aviator's end meant the Explorer lost its Lincoln twin.
