The first generation was introduced in February 2000 as an early 2001 model, built on the UN105 platform of the second generation Explorer with a wheelbase stretched to 125.9 inches. Its four door cab was an Explorer cab with a short pickup bed, a power retractable rear window and XLS, XLT and XLT Premium trims. Its model years run from 2001 to 2005. The Sport Trac was a mid size crew cab pickup that Ford built on a lengthened Explorer chassis, the first mid size pickup Ford produced.
