An all new Zetec 16 valve engine was launched in early 1992, bringing better driveability and marking the return of the XR3i with two versions of the 1.8 liter Zetec. In early 1992 Ford also launched the RS Cosworth, a turbocharged four wheel drive rally homologation special with a 225 PS 2.0 liter engine, aimed at replacing the Sierra Sapphire RS Cosworth. In September Ford facelifted the Escort and Orion with a new grille, bonnet and rear end on the hatchback and convertible. South America began building its version in December 1992.
