The third generation Escort, launched in September 1980 under the codename Erika, was a complete break with its predecessors. It was front wheel drive, a hatchback in the style of the Golf and Civic, and it introduced the overhead cam CVH engines in 1.3 and 1.6 liter sizes beside the older Valencia engine of the Fiesta. It was European Car of the Year for 1981. Its range grew to include the XR3 and XR3i hot hatches, the RS Turbo, a five door estate, a Karmann convertible and the Orion saloon. Its model years run from 1980 to 1985.
