The RS Turbo went on sale in early 1985 and its chassis was heavily criticized. Ford originally planned to build 5,000, the minimum needed for Group A rally homologation, but built 8,604 in all. Meanwhile the Mark III was still turning in strong sales; by the late 1980s it would be the most common car on British roads. In Brazil, a convertible version of the locally built Escort was introduced in April 1985, beside an XR3 built for alcohol fuel.
