In August 1977 the Escort received its first noticeable facelift. The single letter Ford lettering on the grille, boot lid and steering wheel hub was replaced by the oval Ford badge. It was a small visible change on a car that critics already found short of storage space, with a glove compartment fitted only to higher trims and a stalk mounted horn, and it kept Ford's best selling small car looking current against rivals such as the Hillman Avenger and Opel Kadett C.
