The first generation Escape was released in 2000 for the 2001 model year, jointly developed with Mazda as the Mazda Tribute and introduced as Ford's first SUV derived from a car platform. In Europe it was sold under the Maverick name from 2001, replacing a rebadged version of the Nissan Mistral and Terrano II, and in the Philippines Ford introduced the Escape in 2001. The Philippines version originally came in XLS and XLT grades.
