The shared drivetrain with the F Series of the Econoline of 1981 marked the beginning of the aftermarket four wheel drive conversions of the van. It was a body on frame van that Ford sold as a cargo van, passenger van and Club Wagon, and as a cutaway chassis for specialist bodies. It was the best selling full size van in the United States from 1980 until the Transit replaced the vans in 2014. The E Series was Ford's full size van, sold as the Econoline and Club Wagon and as a cutaway chassis.
