The Custom 500 of 1974 continued as the economy full size Ford, after the base Custom was dropped following the 1972 model year, with the companion Ranch Wagon station wagon series. It was intended for fleet buyers and budget conscious customers, with a base six or small block V8. For 1975 consumer market full size Fords would be consolidated under the LTD nameplate. The Custom served Ford as a fleet and economy nameplate.
