The 1971 Custom and Custom 500 were the economy line of the full size Ford range, the Custom 500 slightly better trimmed and marketed toward budget conscious buyers who wanted a low cost automobile, and the Custom sold to fleets. The companion station wagon series with Custom and Custom 500 trim was the Ranch Wagon. A small block V8 was fitted to many, with the base inline six standard. The Custom served Ford as a fleet and economy nameplate.
