By the end of 1986 Ford transitioned all of its half ton trucks to the 8.8 inch rear axle, which ended the leaf sprung Ford 9 inch rear axle the Bronco had used since it was introduced. The 1986 Bronco was the last of the third generation, with Bronco, XL, XLT and Eddie Bauer trims, replaced for 1987 by a version designed as a short wheelbase eighth generation F-150. The Eddie Bauer trim package had been added in 1985.
