For the 1978 model year Ford released the second generation Bronco, to compete better with the Chevrolet K5 Blazer, Dodge Ramcharger and Jeep Cherokee in the full size SUV segment, adapted directly from the F-Series as a shortened F-100 4x4. It retained a lift off hardtop for the three door wagon, in half length, and new features like air conditioning, tilt steering and a six passenger interior. The Bronco overtook both the Blazer and the Ramcharger in sales, and customers waited several months for deliveries.
