In 1971 a Baja Bronco package was marketed through Ford dealers, featuring quick ratio power steering, an automatic transmission and fender flares, inspired by the Bill Stroppe built Baja Broncos, of which about 400 were built between 1971 and 1975. The Dana 44 replaced the Dana 30 as the front axle that year. The racing connection gave the Bronco its off road image in the early 1970s. The Bronco had been available only as a wagon and a half cab pickup since the roadster ended.
