The Omni and Horizon became the best selling Chrysler model line between 1978 and 1980, and the Omni was one of the pieces of evidence that Chrysler was attempting to compete with imports and build small, fuel efficient cars when the company requested federal assistance. The 1980 Omni was a five door hatchback built on the L platform with a 99.2 inch wheelbase, front MacPherson struts and a rack and pinion steering system.
