The 1986 Lancer was the second year of the hatchback based on the Chrysler H platform, a front wheel drive five door that was a rebadged Chrysler LeBaron GTS and sat in the Dodge range between the Aries and the 600. All Lancers were built at Sterling Heights, Michigan, before the Shelby versions that followed in 1987 and 1988, which used a turbocharged 2.2 liter engine, and ahead of the 1989 end of production that April.
