The 1957 model year debuted a new D-501, which replaced the D-500 of the year before as the top Coronet and used Chrysler's proven 354 Hemi V8, leftover engines from the 1956 Chrysler 300B. In the September 1957 Popular Mechanics, owners of six and eight cylinder Coronets complained of water leaks, and a test with a V8 Coronet found water got in. Its Hemi V8 was a leftover from the 1956 Chrysler 300B, and the D-501 took the D-500's place at the top of the Coronet line.
