The Chevelle was redesigned for the 1973 model year, a year later than Chevrolet had first planned, and the redesigned cars had Colonnade styling with side pillars and frameless door windows in place of the hardtops and convertibles of 1972. That change defined the third generation of the Malibu, which was still a trim level of the Chevelle, and it carried the Malibu name on the top line subseries of the new range.
