The 1967 Sting Ray was the last of the second generation and, after five years of refinement, the best of them. It had five small fender vents in place of the earlier three and a single backup lamp above the license plate, and the wildest engine was the L88, close to a pure racing unit. A planned redesign for 1967 slipped because the new car had undesirable aerodynamics, and sales fell to 22,940. Chevrolet meanwhile readied its third generation Corvette for the 1968 model year.
