The 1979 Eldorado was successful in terms of annual production totals compared with the ninth and eleventh generations. Independent rear suspension was adopted for the first time, helping retain rear seat and trunk room in the smaller body, and the Cadillac Trip Computer was available for 1979 models. The Eldorado and the redesigned 1980 Cadillac Seville shared front wheel drive platforms. The new generation was downsized for 1979.
