After years of diminishing sales, Cadillac announced that 1976 would be the final year for the Eldorado convertible, which was heavily promoted by General Motors as the last American convertible. Some 14,000 would be sold, with many customers purchasing multiple cars as investments. Late in the 1976 model year Cadillac offered a Biarritz luxury package on the Eldorado, with unique exterior trim, available through the 1991 model year.
