Buick presented the 1979 model year front wheel drive Riviera, its first front drive production model, once again sharing its mechanical design and platform with the Cadillac Eldorado and Oldsmobile Toronado. A new turbocharged Buick 231 cubic inch V6 of 185 horsepower was installed in the Riviera S Type. The Riviera became Motor Trend's Car of the Year, and sales more than doubled to 52,181. The first front wheel drive Riviera was also Motor Trend's Car of the Year for 1979.
