The E71 was the first X6, developed from 2003 under Peter Tuennermann and styled by Pierre Leclercq, and it began as a concept at the 2007 Frankfurt show. It was a four seat sports activity coupe at first and had a five seat version for the 2012 model year. Production began on 3 December 2007, sales in April 2008, and the X6 M and the ActiveHybrid X6, the E72, followed in 2009. Its model years run from 2008 to 2014.
