The production version of the X2 was unveiled on 25 October 2017, after the Concept X2 had been shown as a preview at the 2016 Paris Motor Show. It was a subcompact luxury crossover marketed as a sports activity coupe, a sportier and less practical alternative to the X1. The F39 shared the front wheel drive UKL2 architecture of the X1 and the Mini Countryman, and the concept won design awards in 2017 and 2018.
