The M1 continued in 1980 as the hand built mid engined coupe of BMW Motorsport, a car that would remain in production only until 1981. Its fibreglass body and tubular steel chassis made it light, and the straight six engine behind the cabin, a version of which was later used in the E24 M6 and the E28 M5, gave it performance rare in 1980. It was not a high volume model, since each car took a long time to build.
