M1 production ended in 1981, after a hand built run that had started in 1978 and that left a limited number of cars. No other mid engined BMW inspired a production car until the Vision EfficientDynamics concept led to the i8 in 2013, and in April 2008 the company unveiled an M1 Homage concept for the 30th anniversary of the car. No other mid engined BMW inspired a production car, and the M1 was a unique case in the history of the company.
