The 8 Series was hit by the global recession of the early 1990s, the Persian Gulf War and energy price spikes, and as a result plans for the high performance M8 variant were dropped in 1991. Only one prototype M8 had been built, and it was not even safe for normal road use. The 850i V12 remained the only model on sale, and sales were far lower than BMW had hoped. Fewer cars than planned were sold, and the coupe stayed a rare and costly sight on the road.
