The 850i was the first model of the 8 Series launched in 1990, with the 5.0 liter M70 V12 engine delivering 300 PS, and it was available with an automatic or a six speed manual gearbox. The car had debuted at the 1989 Frankfurt Motor Show, and it was a very expensive grand tourer sold as a coupe only, with a base price in the United States of around 70,000 dollars. The Alpina B12 5.0 was built from 1990 to 1994 on the 850i.
