V8 engines became available in the E32 in 1992, as the 730i and 740i, the first BMW V8 since the 501 and 502 production ended in 1962. The addition of the V8 gave the 7 Series a broader line, between the straight six and the V12, and it became very popular in the United States. The E32 was then in its last two years. The V8 added to the existing straight six and V12 engines, giving the range three engine types.
